Kangaroo Boxing Club Is PORC Food Truck’s New Restaurant @KangarooBoxing

Last month, Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine (PORC) food truck owners, Josh Saltzman and Trent Allen, announced that they were opening a brick and mortar restaurant at 3412 11th St NW in Columbia Heights.  Let me get it out of the way first: the PORC food truck will continue to operate. 🙂

I just received info that the restaurant will be named Kangaroo Boxing Club (KBC) and is set to open this spring (or summer if there are unexpected delays).  The restaurateurs describe their restaurant:

The new neighborhood bar and restaurant, Kangaroo Boxing Club, will offer brick-and-mortar versions of popular PORC offerings and other unique KBC selections.

Kangaroo Boxing will be the establishment everyone wishes for their own neighborhood. A nice relaxed atmosphere, quality and consistent menu options and a solid selection of beer and wine. KBC will be located at 3410 11th St. NW in Columbia Heights, next door to Meridian Pint.

Follow @KangarooBoxing for details.

Fans of PORC can breathe a sigh of relief, as the KBC will not be sending PORC into retirement. The PORC truck will continue to operate daily around DC.

The name, Kangaroo Boxing Club, comes from long-running, drink-infused, late-night bar discussions on the fact that, without technology, man is physically unable to compete with the majority of the animal kingdom. How would you win a match with a kangaroo?

DC Food Truck Parking Troubles Highlighted

We’ve all seen food trucks getting ticketed for over-staying their welcome in a 2-hour parking space.  It has been recognized as a cost of doing business, or a de facto tax on food trucks.  DCist has a fine piece of reporting giving us a glimpse of what happens to some trucks that rack up too many of those parking tickets.

It does highlight the fact that the proposed new DC food truck regulations would fix this issue by allowing DC food trucks to park in a spot as long as their parking is paid, except for dessert trucks which would still have to move on after 10 minutes if no line is formed.  The public comment period has ended for the proposed new regulations, and we expect the DC gov to make some changes before they are presented to City Council.  The sooner, the better, because the DC vendor sales tax act goes into effect on Oct 1, 2012.

Food Trucks Serving At Fairgrounds Until 8pm *pics*

Thanks to Wonky Ventures for sending in the photos of Fairgrounds DC in action today (April 3)!  Look at all of those Nationals fans in their red shirts and hats. 😉

The Fairgrounds is located outside of National’s baseball stadium and across the street from the Navy Yard metro stop at Half & M St SE.  It is the same venue that used to be called Das Bullpen, but has recently received a face-lift combined with a pop-up retail concept.

DC Food Trucks Serve At Half St And M St SE (Fairgrounds)

UPDATE 2: Check out photos of the space!

UPDATE: Serving time has been postponed until about 1pm today (April 3) as they are still setting up the venue.

Six DC food trucks will be serving out of the Half and M St SE site today from 11am – 8pm: Red Hook Lobster Pound, Big Cheese, DC Empanadas, Curbside Cupcakes, Doug the Food Dude and Tasty Kabob.

Remember Truckeroo at Das Bullpen?  Well that site has undergone a transformation into what the developers now call The Fairgrounds.  The concept uses shipping containers as a theme, which are scattered around the perimeter of the site, as well as the pop-up retail strategy to woo vendors into the unconventional space.  The center of the surface lot is filled with the usual tables and chairs and the north side is still reserved for a stage and music.

Today (April 3, 2012) is a soft-opening of the site and the grand opening will be on April 12th for the home opener.  This is the first time food trucks will be present in the hours leading up to and during a baseball game, so it should be interesting to see how baseball fans take to DC food trucks, if they aren’t already fans. 🙂

I am assured that entry is free, though I don’t have any further info on what other vendors will be present at the site today.
