iPhone App Giveaways This Week!

Hello DC food truck fans!  This week, in true holiday spirit, I’m giving away several iPhone apps!

I’ve partnered up with the folks at LuckyRT.com to handle the contest.  All you have to do is visit my giveaway link at LuckyRT.com and retweet the Food Truck Fiesta iPhone app giveaway.  And, while you’re there, why not enter into a few other contests? 🙂

DC Food Trucks Playing In The Snow

I’m just blown away by the DC food truck scene in Washington, DC. When it snows in DC, like today, Washingtonians typically panic and business is weak. But, just take a look at this snapshot of today’s food truck fiesta map (above). DC food trucks are out in full force, just like it was a mild summer day! Kudos to the food truck operators for resisting the inclement weather panic and helping to provide us with gourmet quality food at convenient locations.  One of you will definitely see me dining at a food truck today. 🙂

Update: I just got back from lunch and two food trucks that I stopped at had mid-sized lines!  Food truck fans seem to be inclement weather panic resistant as well!

The Big Cheese Officially Launches Today (Monday)

As you can see on the  map, The Big Cheese began to tweet its locations today so that you can get your grilled cheese goodness! The location scheduled for today is L’Enfant Plaza.  They soft launched last week but were not announcing locations.  For more info, see The Big Cheese page!

RootsCamp Hosts Several DC Food Trucks This Weekend

I was just following the tweets and it looks like several DC food trucks are serving in the vicinity of the RootsCamp conference being held at the GWU Marvin Center today (21st and H Street NW).  The conference also runs on Sunday, so maybe all of the trucks will be back?  It’s a pretty impressive display of DC food truck organization.

Trucks represented are: @wheresauca @sangonwheels @CapMacDC @dcslices @bigcheesetruck @TaKorean @curbsidecupcake

Rebel Heroes Ceases Ops, Truck Sold To TheBigCheese!

Is there a such thing as Food Truck Heaven?  More like reincarnation!  On October 7, 2010, Rebel Heroes tweeted that they would be closing down for the winter season, so naturally, I emailed them to ask when they would be opening back up.  The response I got was “We’ll let you know as soon as we finalize plans. Please stay tuned.”  Well, what really happened, according to Going Out Gurus, was that Rebel Heroes notified Arlington County that they were ceasing operations.  A month later, they sold their truck to a new food truck operator: TheBigCheese.  So, if you’re grabbing a grilled cheese sandwich in the future and you swear that you’ve seen the same truck around before, now you know why!

Restaurant Lobbyists Create Stir At DC’s Wilson Building Yesterday

When the Prince of Petworth reported yesterday that emergency legislation to ban food trucks was being discussed at DC’s Wilson building, the DC food truck scene experienced a concerted eruption of anger and letter writing to council members. From the comments of the post and various tweets, I put together the following picture: a dozen or so lobbyists representing the restaurant association, building owners and [old school hot dog & chips] vending depots converged on the Wilson building in a sort of sneak-attack to try to put emergency legislation on the DC Council’s table to ban food trucks from operating in DC.  Tommy Wells tweeted this morning that no such legislation is on the table for today.

So, it appears that DC citizens and food truck fans have survived another broadside attack from those who are acting against the documented wishes of DC citizens and trying to stifle culinary innovation.

The DC food truck operators have setup a website to help you write a letter to the DC council to ensure that these kinds of threats to the DC food truck world don’t happen again in the future.

As Winter Season Approaches, Some Trucks Hibernate

It’s getting colder and more holidays are approaching! With all of the holiday meals and the subset of the population that travels home to a different city, the DC food truck fan base may not be as strong as usual.

I’ve noticed that a few trucks have been following very light schedules lately, like Fry Captain, even though I crave a milkshake during the coldest days of Washington DC’s winters.

But, some trucks just take the winter season off completely. Rebel Heroes, which serves Arlington, VA, tweeted on October 7, 2010 that that was its last day of the season. I emailed them to get an idea of when they’d be back on the streets and I got the answer, “We’ll let you know as soon as we finalize plans. Please stay tuned.”

New DC Food (Beverage) Truck: Cafe Vida Express

I just got word that a mobile coffee truck has hit DC’s streets! It is called Cafe Vida and just started serving on Tuesday in select downtown DC areas. The artwork on the side of the truck says Mobile Coffee Bar – neat! I will write more on the Cafe Vida page when I get more info and pictures!

Cap Mac DC Soft Opening Today! (Monday)

Cap Mac, the mac & cheese DC food truck, just tweeted that it will have its soft opening today. I can’t wait to try this out! Cap Mac’s location will show up on the Food Truck Fiesta map and in the iPhone app once they start tweeting locations. 🙂  Here is a copy of the relevant tweet:

Soft opening today Limited but great menu options all week Be sure to check back for our locations. #dcfoodtruck #gethungrydc #readysetgo

District Taco’s Brick & Mortar Store Opens Today!

The veteran District Taco food truck is opening its first brick & mortar restaurant today!  The address is 5723 Lee Hwy, Arlington, VA 22207.

Today marks the first time in DC food truck history where a food truck has given rise to a full-time brick and mortar restaurant. I hope to visit the restaurant soon to provide a review.  But in the mean time, TBD.com member blogger ARLnow has some photos and info to share!
