PORC Mobile To Launch Today

PORC Mobile, AKA Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine, will be launching their food truck today! As the name implies, they will be serving various meat products, like smoked brisket, pulled pork & sausages. According to TBD.com, they held a soft opening this past weekend at Pug (H Street Northeast).

According to their latest Facebook status, it seem like the plan is to serve lunch today at Franklin Square.

People’s Bao Update, New Truck, Catering Events

The owner of the upcoming DC food truck, People’s Bao, got in touch with me to provide the following info:

  • People’s Bao is changing up their truck plans and are building out a new truck.  So, that will delay the planned February launch time by a few months.
  • People’s Bao is now catering events, so feel free to get in contact with Peter directly for your event needs.

For more information on People’s Bao, check out my People’s Bao page.

District Of Pi Restaurant Rolls Food Truck In February

Thanks to a tipster that the new District of Pi Restaurant in Penn Quarter is planning on rolling a food truck in February!  They already have a twitter username: @PiTruckDC.  I just started up a profile page for PiTruck here.

It’s nice to see a brick and mortar restaurant joining in on the food truck scene, which is quickly turning into a necessary component of running a restaurant.  Before, we’d ask a restaurant if they had a Facebook page, and now we’ll also start asking a restaurant if they have a food truck. 🙂

Update: Here is some more info on the District of Pi restaurant in Penn Quarter, opening on March 14, 2011. 3.14, get it? 🙂

Sauca Sends Marco Polo Truck To National Airport!

It’s so crazy, it just might work!  Sauca sent its 3rd food truck, Marco Polo, to Terminal A of Reagan National Airport today.  I’ve never seen a food truck serve at National Airport, but it’s a revolutionary idea.  This additional food option is definitely better than spending mega $ on sub-par food inside the airport terminal.

@floridagirlindc Job Shadows El Floridano

@floridagirlindc has an excellent “a day in the life of..” post for the El Floridano food truck, deliverer of the tasty Cuban, Bahn Mi, and Chiang Mai sandwiches.  As you may deduce from El Floridano’s twitter handle (@FLmeetsDC), the owner & operator of the truck is originally from Florida.  A couple of interesting quotes from the write-up:

The Metropolitan Police Department has hired nine officers to dog the food trucks and enforce the regulations.

El Floridano is solar powered, so they have to find a parking spot that is sunny to fire up the grill!

Food Trucks Encounter Health Inspection Harassment

Do DC food trucks get inspected more than brick and mortar restaurants? The answer can be summed up by reading El Floridano’s latest Facebook status:

My 1st job in DC was Exec. Chef saw health inspect. 1 time in 8 Mos. 7 Mos. In biz. w/truck and today will be 8th inspect. Enforcement or harassment???

Eight health inspections in seven months?  That’s pretty ridiculous and, in my opinion, could be driven by external political forces (restaurant lobby harassment?).  I have even heard reports of MPD boarding truck kitchens during the course of busy lunch hour traffic to assist the Department of Health with inspections.  Is that even legal?

But, if you were ever concerned about DC food truck food safety, you can be assured that the food is very safe and being inspected on an unreasonably frequent basis.  I may not be able to say the same for many upscale DC restaurants! 🙂
