Announcing Truckeroo: Monthly DC Food Truck Event

Quite frequently I am asked when the next huge DC food truck event, like last year’s Curbside Cookoff, will be held.  Put Friday, June 3rd on your calendars because Truckeroo is coming to Das Bullpen in Southeast next to the National’s ballpark and the Navy Yard metro station.  The event is spearheaded by Bo Blair, owner of the The Bullpen and Das Bullpen beer gardens, and in conjunction with the DC Food Truck Association, Capitol Riverfront BID, Washington City Paper and yours truly, Food Truck Fiesta.

Time: Friday, June 3rd, 11am-9pm

More details to come and all of your favorite DC food trucks will be present!

Sixth & Rye Kosher Deli To Open May 20

I just got word from the folks at Sixth & Rye that their food truck will be launching on May 20, 2011. The coolest part about Spike Mendelsohn’s project is that they will be borrowing the Eat Wonky truck (though, using their own kitchen equipment) on Fridays to make things happen.

From the press release:

The truck’s signature hot smoked corned beef sandwich on fresh rye bread will combine the flavors of smoked meat and homemade hot mustard to form an undeniably delicious version of the classic. Several side dishes ranging from an inspired Israeli couscous salad to fresh cut potato chips will complement the signature sandwich. The menu will also feature a grilled vegetable wrap and a “Meal Deal” option. Menu items will range from $2 – $12.

Sauca To Open Restaurant & Meat Head/La Gloria For Sale

The seemingly different items in the title of the post are actually all related because Sauca, Meat Head and La Gloria Mexicana DC food trucks are all owned by the same entity.

ARLnow gets credit for spotting the Meat Head and La Gloria Mexicana trucks sitting idle in a Virginia parking lot with for sale signs on them.  Read the comments of the post and you’ll find one from the owner explaining the situation.

Food Truck Ninja tipped me off to Sauca’s Facebook post detailing plans to open up a Sauca brick and mortar restaurant.  The location will be 4707 Columbia Pike, Arlington.

Dipping Dots Now Serving

It looks like Dippin Dots quietly started serving! As soon as they tweet their next location, they’ll show up on the website, iPhone app and Android app! 🙂

Second Lobster Truck Launches Today, Named Lobby 2 @LobstertruckDC

The popular Red Hook Lobster Pound food truck has officially launched their second truck today! It is docked at the Landon Azalea Fest (6101 Wilson Ln, Bethesda) and will be serving from 10am-5pm.

Lobby 1 is also serving today in DC at 33rd & Patterson NW to serve those helping to clean up Lafayette Park.

Police Drama At GWU

Today, (4/27/2011), police were out in the vicinity to George Washington University (GWU) and asking DC food trucks to move along if they didn’t have a line of customers formed in front of the truck. Two trucks, Sauca and Tasty Kabob, were affected just prior to lunch time. But, as lunch hour approached and lines started to form, the reports of police action ceased. Tasty Kabob returned to GWU shortly after being asked to leave and found some hungry customers. Later, other food trucks joined the lunch gathering at GWU without incident.

The word is that a local brick and mortar shop was the instigator of this latest food truck crack-down. And, the name dropped was not one of the usual suspects we’ve seen from Farragut Square and other incidents.

In the end, I am anxiously waiting for the DC gov to enact some reasonable food truck regulations so that we can bring some sanity to mobile vending in DC!

Two New DC Food Trucks: @1styellowvendor and @tortugatruck

A couple of quick news items:

@1styellowvendor is a second truck from the existing @yellowvendor.  @1styellowvendor launched today (4/26/2011)!

And @tortugatruck is an upcoming truck launching mid May in Fairfax county.

New Food Truck: Scoops2u (Ice Cream) @scoops2u

Scoops2u ice cream truck

The owners of Scoops2u got in touch with me to let us know about their new ice cream truck, affectionately named, Chipwich!  Launching in 3 to 4 weeks, Scoops2u offers fresh hand-made chipwiches, baking the cookies in the morning, using a big scoop of Haagen Dazs ice cream and assembling cookie sandwiches for customers to order.  Fans can mix and match flavors and cookies.

They’ll start serving just in time for DC’s summer weather!

Voting Guide For DC’s April 26 Special Election – Which Candidates Care About Food Trucks?

As you all know, there will be a special election in the District of Columbia on April 26th to fill the City Council At-Large position. But, what we didn’t know is how each of the candidates feel about DC’s food trucks and mobile food vending. To that end, the DC Food Truck Association thoroughly interviewed the candidates and posted the responses on their website.  Here are the responses from Sekou Biddle, Joshua Lopez, Patrick Mara, Alan Page, and Bryan Weaver.
